Assimilating the Web

Question: Considering their different natures (AOL controls the subscriber lists and a huge chunk of the content, and Microsoft controls the consumer operating system and browser), is the war between these two leading companies really inevitable?

Hypothesis: Both companies want the best of each other, and they are not to end the war if it entails giving up the glory of being a monopolized industry.

Question: Even if either AOL or Microsoft wins the battle, will it really ever be able to "control" and "lock in" its users?
